As an IT service provider, it’s important for us to understand the difference between “encrypt” and “encrypt”, so that we can use the right term at the right time. Here’s a detailed guide to the lexicon surrounding the terms “encrypt” and “crypt”.
A few definitions to remember
✔️ Encrypt: this is the action that renders a document totally incomprehensible to anyone who doesn’t have the key.
✔️ Decrypt: find the key to an encrypted message using its original version.
❌ Encrypt: this means to encrypt without having the key.
This term doesn’t really make sense in this context.
It’s not even recognized and used by the French Academy and ANSSI.
❌ Encrypt: this is an Anglicism meaning to encrypt.
✔️ Decrypt: this is the process of recovering the original version of an encrypted message without having the key.
✔️ Encryption: the act of enciphering.
❌ Encryption: this is a word used to determine the price of something.
It is not part of cryptography.
🙊 Encode/Decode: writing data in a specific way is not intended to guarantee any security.
This mechanism is reversible and does not require a key.
