What is Google glass?
The literal translation is Google Glass.
But beware, this is not about correcting your eyesight (at least not yet), but rather about equipping you with interactive glasses.
Google’s Glass project, which has been maturing since 2012, is due to become a reality in Switzerland in 2014, so soon… But the announced price tag could still turn some people off (we’re talking CHF 1,500).
Geeks are bound to be seduced by the functionalities of these glasses, which seem to come from another planet.
Note that your frame will be equipped with a single lens.
How does Google Glass work?
The world of “Total Recall” or “Robocop” no longer seems so far away.
One of the special features of Google Glass is the way it reacts to our head nods.
I nod = I click.
Welcome to the futuristic (but very real) world of Google Glass.
As you’ll have gathered, this ease of navigation will appeal not only to people who are “overbooked”, or who always have their hands full (manual professions, for example), but also to people with reduced mobility.
Of course, you can also use the touchpad located on one of the frame’s temples to move around and navigate.
These glasses are therefore finger- and head-operated, but also voice-operated, since they claim to be both tactile and voice-activated.
What features does Google Glass offer?
Make way for “augmented reality”… To work, the Glass will first have to be synchronized with a wifi device (smartphones or other).
From then on, the world of the Internet will be before your eyes (and that’s not a metaphor).
Ordinary” functions such as sending and receiving text (email, sms) and voice messages, geolocation (with GPS), image and video capture, calendar (reminder, notification…)… are all accessible.
This smart bezel is therefore programmed to respond to voice commands, more precisely key phrases, of which here are a few examples:
- Ok glass: triggers opening of voice program
- Take a photo (to share)
- Record a video (to share)
- Record an audio message (to share)
- Go to… (simultaneous optimized GPS guidance)
- Search… on Google
- Translate my sentence

The first prototypes are obviously circulating with English phrases, but we’re counting on Google to come up with a multilingual application.
In addition to these basics, there are more specific functionalities, such as videoconferencing, which will appeal to certain professional sectors.
With this revolutionary product, Google wants its web users to open up more to the real world, without disconnecting from the virtual world.
In fact, once you’ve put the glasses on, all you have to do is glance at the (very small) screen on the single lens over your right eye.
This design gives you a totally unobstructed field of vision, enabling you to have a more convivial exchange with your interlocutor(s).
How is Google Glass equipped?
They function like a computer, and are naturally equipped with a processor, flash memory, microphones and speaker (to guarantee voice communication) and a wifi antenna (which also enables Bluetooth connection).
Other little-known features are also present (accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, etc.).
In short, Google Glass is a real jewel of new technology.
What surprises does Google Glass have in store for us?
While Google has been teasing this product, which will only be on the market in 2014, the company is continuing to develop new functionalities that can be added to existing ones.
In fact, rumour has it that Google is working on the idea of integrating the Google Glass process into conventional eyewear… But shhh!
In all likelihood, Google Glass could also respond to the blinking of our eyelids, to validate the execution of a command or action.
We can therefore imagine that two quick blinks would correspond to a double-click… At least, that’s what one of the new firmwares for these glasses seems to suggest.
To keep the device fun, Google is also working on the development of game applications.
A similar order has been placed in neighbouring France, and developers Ama Studios (in Brittany) have already proposed 3 new games.
With all this content to look forward to, we can imagine that fans of high-tech products and even the biggest geeks will quickly become hooked on this new frame.
