If you’ve heard of LTE (Long Term Evolution), don’t be surprised by the term.
It’s actually a first cousin of 4G (4th Generation), in other words, a mobile telecoms network from the latest generation.
Although the name LTE is not yet on everyone’s lips in Switzerland, there is a clear trend towards LTE network expansion.
Swisscom now has more than 500,000 subscribers to this 4G network, ranking 6th worldwide (source: WCIS, a leading mobile analysis service).
LTE’s place in the world
According to the WCMA Statistical Review, conducted in 2012, LTE/4G network figures are impressive, with over 60 million subscribers worldwide.
With this large-scale rollout, mobile operators and manufacturers are naturally on the lookout for bargains.
If you want to join the LTE/4G bandwagon, there’s no other solution than to equip yourself with a phone that supports LTE/4G.
The arrival of 3G had already turned things upside down, and 4G continues the trend.
The benefits of LTE
If Switzerland, and Swisscom in particular, has invested a small sum in improving and developing its LTE network (to the tune of 2 billion over 3 years), it is above all to meet the population’s growing need for connectivity and a seamless link with the Internet world.
However, the technological advances offered by LTE are not new.
Researchers have been making progress for several years now, and since its launch in Sweden in 2009, progress has only continued.
Among the considerable advantages of its LTE network, Swisscom is particularly proud of its transfer speed, with scalable bandwidth (currently up to 20 Mbps).
