Background and issues
Our customer, a Geneva-based company specializing in welding equipment and techniques, has 4 employees.
Prior to Infologo’s intervention, their IT infrastructure was as follows:
- 1 Windows 2012 R2 server hosted in the cloud at OVH
with :- Users connecting remotely with Remote Desktop Protocol ;
- E-mail, office automation and collaboration were all carried out from this server (data on a D drive).
All their files were therefore stored on this shared disk; - Access to Winbiz from this server ;
- Sending printouts from this server.
- ThinClient with Windows 10 ;
- 2 Laptops ;
- An Internet network with Swisscom.
What was the company’s need at the time?
The OVH server (Windows 2012 R2) had become obsolete and slow.
Also, the number of simultaneous connections was limited to a maximum of 2 people.
This was becoming a daily problem.
Finally, as the OVH server was not optimally secured, and had no firewall capability, this solution was no longer an option for the company.
At the same time, the person managing their IT infrastructure no longer had enough time to devote to them, and recommended us to offer a new, similar (i.e. easy-to-use) infrastructure with the new versions of Windows Server, and thus improve server and access security.
Finally, problems of disk space and slowness were also noted on the 2 Thin Clients that the customer was using (in the office) to connect to the RDP server at OVH.
Proposed solutions
To meet these different needs, we first proposed creating an infrastructure on the Infomaniak Public Cloud.
To this end, we have deployed a FortiOS Appliance VM (Firewall) and a Windows server 2022 server on which all users can connect remotely and simultaneously.
Also, as a security measure, we restricted the connection to the server with GeoIP rules.
Finally, we set up and configured a Multi-Factor connection with the DUO solution, which has become mandatory for authentication to the server.
The customer’s 2 Thin Client computers were replaced by Dell Optiplex desktops in order to renew the computer park and provide higher performance computers.
The main objective: to remedy the problems of insufficient disk space and slowness that the customer was experiencing.
The results to date
According to our customer, “This new IT infrastructure has enabled us to carry out our day-to-day work faster, and therefore more productively.”
The team is delighted with the new structure, which provides a better IT working environment and a more sophisticated security dimension.
