The month of October has seen its fair share of news and articles on the WPA2 WiFi security flaw.
The flaw was named “Krack” to give it a familiar name, while retaining its hacking flavour.
Now that the furor over this new hack has died down, we thought it important to set the record straight.
What is the Krack fault?
Krack is a recent vulnerability affecting Wi-Fi networks.
Capable of acting against both personal and corporate networks, this security flaw allows information that should be encrypted to be read in clear text.
Krack was revealed by a group of researchers, who managed to “hack” a wi-fi network protected by a WPA2 key, without needing to break it.
If you want more technical details on this flaw, the web is full of them.
We’ll focus on the most obvious findings:
- a WPA2 key alone does not guarantee the security of a corporate wifi network
- software running PCs, smartphones (Ios and Android) and Wi-Fi hotspots needs to be updated
How do I update my software?
If you have computer support with Infologo (your computer network is managed by us): your Windows operating systems are up to date.
For smartphones (IOS, Android, etc.) updates are offered by the publishers.
Regular updates are required… but you already knew that.
If you don’t have a support contract with us, please contact us if you’d like us to check your Windows versions.
Access points: how does Infologo protect its customers?
For customers with Assistance informatique Infologo: we have taken steps to protect our customers from this flaw.
Following the advice of the manufacturers, who themselves corrected this type of flaw and proposed patches as early as October 10, we have updated the software embedded in the access points or Wi-Fi hotspots installed on our customers’ networks. For customers without support: it is quite possible that some customers may not be up to date if they are in the following situations:
- no support/maintenance contract with Infologo
- obsolete Wi-Fi hardware for which manufacturers no longer offer software patches
If this sounds like you, don’t hesitate to contact us – we’ll be delighted to help.
