In any society, it’s impossible to develop properly without rules and a system of sanctions.
Why should it be any different when it comes to cyberspace, especially in times of teleworking?
Geneva has volunteered to set an example in the field of cybersecurity and, above all, in protecting SMEs from attacks.

CYBERSECURITY TAKES ON ALL ITS IMPORTANCE

If the Internet were a country, it would be the 6th biggest consumer of energy in the world.
This figure illustrates the importance of the Internet in our lives today.
The Internet has changed the way we consume, think, work and choose.
But have we changed the way we “think about security”?
Do we really know how to secure its use to avoid threats?
What most companies today fail to understand is that hacking, in a professional environment, exploits loopholes that are often linked to human error.
That’s why people need to be trained to combat these attacks.
This is a very important phenomenon today, because the consequences of a computer security flaw can be serious for a company. In today’s telecommuting context, it’s imperative that your teleworkers are aware of these cyber-threats and the types of attacks that are possible.

EACH HIS OWN RESPONSIBILITY

Not only do you have to train your staff, you also have to make them aware of their responsibilities.
Everyone has a role to play in a company, and the same goes for a cyber attack.
Everyone has a role to play and, above all, everyone has a responsibility.
Fighting attacks is a team effort. We are all, in our own way, responsible for computer attacks.
We create vulnerabilities or misuse our company’s IT resources.
Some companies have therefore decided to sign the Tech Accord to show the world that they accept their share of responsibility and will fight the threat together.
The Tech Accord is a public commitment signed by some forty international companies, declaring that they are committed to protecting individuals and businesses against cyber-attacks with the same commitment and resources.
They also wish to prevent criminals from using their own technology to attack consumers.
An agreement designed to support the securing of cyber space by its major players.
The State of Geneva has welcomed this commitment and encourages other major players in the field to join them.

WHAT GENEVA HAS TO OFFER AND WHY

Geneva is home to a large number of international companies and organizations.
This makes Geneva a city with influence on the rest of the world through the decisions made within its borders.
Just as the Geneva Conventions are international treaties, the State would like to discuss a set of rules and sanctions concerning IT security, and then see them accepted and respected by a majority of countries.
This is one of the few places where decisions can be taken internally or externally, and thus concern all the countries of the world.
And since the Internet knows no borders, the rules to be respected must be the same “internationally” speaking.

CORPORATE KIT

Lack of awareness of the risks and costs associated with untrained staff are surely the reasons why SMEs are easy targets for cyber-attacks.
Solving the problems caused by cyber-attacks therefore starts with training these companies in computer security.
The State of Geneva has provided SMEs with basic awareness-raising material including :

  • Instructions for use

  • A roadmap for planning the campaign’s progress

  • An e-mail to send to your employees

  • An in-company poster campaign highlighting the three most dangerous and common types of cyber-attack:

    • Phishing
    • Password hacking
    • Social engineering
  • A presentation to lead awareness session(s)

Other resources available: – In order to raise awareness and improve the knowledge of employees in Geneva’s SMEs, the canton of Geneva offers a remote self-assessment and self-training system. If you have any doubts or questions about your company’s security during this period of telecommuting, don’t hesitate to contact our IT security experts.
