As part of our CSR and RNE (Responsabilité Numérique des Entreprises) approach, Infologo took part in its 1st Fresque du Numérique! 💻
This workshop was a fun way for our teams to understand the environmental challenges of digital technology.
As a vendor of IT equipment, this approach is essential if we are to understand and, above all, act accordingly.
We’re convinced that, even in our own small way, we can contribute to reducing our environmental impact.
Infologo fresco: we’re techies, not artists…
Too often we hear “it’s digital, it’s virtual, so it’s green and positive” without thinking. 💻
Digital technology can certainly bring us many positive things collectively, but it also has negative impacts that we need to be aware of in order to make the right decisions.
The Digital Fresco
Based on the pedagogy of La Fresque du Climat, La Fresque du Numérique enables everyone to understand environmental impacts and think about actions to reduce these impacts while having a good time. 😇
A constructive day with many ideas for action and advice on how to accelerate the projects we’ve already launched to reduce our impact on the environment.
We have entitled our mural “4%, tout fout le camp”.
These 4% represent the digital sector’s share of CO2 emissions.
What we learned during the workshop
💻 34 billion electronic devices are currently in use worldwide.
📱 100 million unused phones sleep in our homes.
♻️ 17% of all appliances are collected for recycling… & only a small proportion is recycled.
👷🏻♀️ If we continue to extract rare metals at the current rate, we won’t be able to manufacture appliances in 30 years’ time.
📈 Digital accounted for 20% of our emissions in 2010… it will account for 60% by 2025.
💾 Hardware = 76% of total digital emissions, largely due to their manufacturing impact.
Possible solutions
💻 Use fewer devices (do you really need 2 screens?)
📱 Use the few devices you have for as long as possible (using a smartphone for 3 years instead of 2 reduces its lifespan impact by 50%).
♻️ Switch off/unplug devices when not in use.
Also, make sure that unused devices are properly recycled (for example, return your old iPhone to the Apple Store).
Make sure your company applies all the above principles and fully assesses its emissions while taking concrete steps to reduce them.
If you’re interested in the impact of digital technology on the environment, or wondering whether or not you should take part in the Fresque du Numérique, we’d be delighted to discuss it with you!
Our participants testify
This fresco was very instructive, and enabled us to really understand in a more global way the complex links between all the processes involved in our daily actions as part of our business.
It (the fresco) also raised questions, and our discussions were very enriching.
I took part because I feel an impulse within me that goes something like this: I want to do my bit, to participate, because I know that being born on Earth has an impact, whether I like it or not. Taking part in this type of workshop gives you a more concrete idea of the reality of the current situation of our human society and the impact it has on its environment, with figures to back it up. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not enough just to know, you have to go back to it regularly, because our brains don’t like constraints, so they tend to forget. ” I feel co-responsible for what happens on Earth “
